Description

  • Senior Geography

Students explore two local islands: South Stradbroke Island and Woogoompah Island. Students conduct a transect study across South Stradbroke island from the exposed eastern fore-dunes dominated by spinifex to the sheltered western lee-ward side of the island. Students investigate successional changes observed in the soil composition and plant communities in order to better understand natural processes that support biodiversity.

Students then collect data from nearby Woogoompah Island where in the early 1990s slumping of dredge spoil led to the devastation of an adjacent wetland ecosystem. Recovery has been slow and management strategies have changed over the years. Students gather & analyse data from the island and evaluate proposed management strategies, making recommendations for sustaining biodiversity in this section of the island based upon their investigation.
