Loved to Death? Tourism on a Sand Island

Unit 2: Planning Sustainable Places​​

Topic 1:  Responding to challenges facing a place in Australia

Assessment: Investigation – Field Report

A white sandy beach dappled in sunshine, fringed by the graceful branches of Casuarina trees, with the sound of the distant roar of the ocean waves – could be paradise. It's attractions draw many people to stay, but is the place being loved to death?

Students will travel 45 minutes on the vessel Educat to South Stradbroke Island to visit up to three sites to investigate the impact of visitors on those popular destinations.  They will consider the challenges facing one of these sites and propose management strategies to contribute to its sustainability. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and perspectives are integral to the study. A field booklet and assessment task will be developed in consultation with teachers as per the visiting school's requirements. 


Optional: Overnight camp.  We can tailor a camp program to specifically meet your requirements.

Variation:  The program can be tweaked to be offered to year 10 students and can be designed as a project-based or problem-based investigation.

Pre-requisites:  Resources will be provided to teachers to prepare students with background knowledge and to develop the field skills required for the excursion.

Requirements: Students are required to wear a hat while outdoors. It is recommended that students wear sun-smart clothing and lace-up shoes. 

NB. There will be some walking involved on this field trip, including over sand dunes.  A change of shoes may be required as participants will almost certainly be getting their shoes wet as they disembark on the beach.
