Freshwater ponds

Year 4 Australian Curriculum (Science)

In the freshwater ponds, students will focus on the life cycles of the various freshwater invertebrates living in this enviroment. Using nets, students will capture, identify, observe and release various freshwater invertebrates. Students will consider the importance of this environment in the life cycle process.

Complements C2C Unit: Survival in the Australian Environment
Adaptations for life in freshwater is the focus for this module. Students use dip-nets to catch a range of aquatic freshwater organisms. They observe structural and behavioural adaptations for each organism and postulate how the adaptations may be used to improve its chances of survival in that particular environment.

Students will explore a mangrove environment, investigating the relationship between the growth and survival of living things and the physical conditions of a saltwater environment.
Students investigate how regular saltwater inundation through tidal fluctuations affects the living things in a mangrove environment. They consisder the impact of human activity on living things and the implications for decision making.

Students identify freshwater aquatic organisms and explore feeding relationships between them. They construct food chains and food webs from the information collected. They observe feeding structures and other adaptations that can provide clues as to the organisms position in the food chain.
