Prep - 'Our Living World'

Students take a sensory journey and investigate the needs of living things in our mangrove environment. They examine both the animals and plants in this unique and natural environment.
Students determine that the survival of all living things is reliant on basic needs being met and discuss the consequences for living things when their needs are not met.

Students explore links between external features of living things and the environment where they are found. They examine both animals and plants in the muddy mangrove environment. Students use methods such as drawing and photography to record observations.
Students predict consequences of environmental change on living things.

Students examine how living things grow. They investigate how Mangrove plants reproduce i.e. parent plants and propagules. Students compare similarities and differences between plant and animal development.

Students will explore the diverse mangrove environment to examine relationships between living things and their dependence on this environment. By considering human and natural changes to the habitats, student will predict the effects of these changes on living things.

Complements C2C Unit: Survival in the Australian Environment

Students observe and discuss the structural adaptations of various mangrove species and relate them to the marine environment in which they live. They observe a range of other plants and animals living in the mangroves and consider how each possesses a number of adaptations that assist them to survive in their specific environmental niche. Students discuss how each species deals with high concentrations of salt in their environment. Adaptations are described in terms of ..."structural", "behavioural" and "functional".

Students will explore a mangrove environment, investigating the relationship between the growth and survival of living things and the physical conditions of a saltwater environment.
Students investigate how regular saltwater inundation through tidal fluctuations affects the living things in a mangrove environment. They consisder the impact of human activity on living things and the implications for decision making.
