Trawling (day or camp)

WebPartZone1_1

Year 7

Program summary

Environmental focus: Food webs; habitat; adaptations; interdependence
Year: 7 and Special
Time: Half day
Maximum number: 15 students (30 students when combined with another half day program)

Description

In this program, students board the research vessel 'Educat' and participate in a 'beam trawl' during which they catch bottom dwellers and look closely at their body shape, position of the eyes, methods of locomotion and other structural features. They identify and record the species as well as the numbers caught. They discuss the various methods of trawling and their environmental impacts including by catch and ways that have been developed to minimise the detrimental effects on non-targeted species.

Each year level has a slightly different focus consistent with the Australian Curriculum.

Year 7  Australian Curriculum (Science)

Complements C2C Units: Organising & Affecting Organisms

Students board the Educat and participate in a trawling activity. The organisms caught are sorted and identified. Students construct a food chain / web based on the species caught (either on the day or from records kecpt by JWEEC). Students consider the impact of humans in the food chain, human activities such as trawling and the pressure that humans place on marine ecosystems .

SU: There are differences within and between groups of organisms; Classification helps organise this diversity (ACSSU111)

Interactions between organisms can be described in terms of food chains and food webs; human activity can affect these interactions (ACSSU112)

SIS: Collaboratively and individually plan and conduct a range of investigation types, including fieldwork, ensuring that safety and ethical guidelines are followed (ACSIS125)
Construct and use a range of representations including graphs, keys and models to represent patterns or relationships including using digital technologies as appropriate. (ACSIS129); Evaluating (ASSIS130); Communicating (ACSIS110)
