Year 7

Program summary (day or camp)

Environmental focus: Life cycles; the physical environment; food webs; habitat; adaptations; interdependence; features of plants; biological classification; grouping
Year: 7
Time: Half day (can be part of a full day's program when combined with a complementary activity)
Maximum number: 1 class group

Description

Using nets, students catch small freshwater creatures and sort, examine, identify and classify them. Students also learn of the relationship between these creatures and water quality. Students investigating the relationship between the growth and survival of living things and the physical conditions of an aquatic freshwater environment.
Students consider the impact of human activity on water quality and its subsequent impact on the composition of living things in a freshwater ecosystem.

Year 7 Australian Curriculum (Science)

Complements C2C Units: Organising & Affecting Organisms
Students identify freshwater aquatic organisms and explore feeding relationships between them. They construct food chains and food webs from the information collected. They observe feeding structures and other adaptations that can provide clues as to the organisms position in the food chain.

SU: There are differences within and between groups of organisms; Classification helps organise this diversity (ACSSU111)

Interactions between organisms can be described in terms of food chains and food webs; human activity can affect these interactions (ACSSU112)

SIS: Collaboratively and individually plan and conduct a range of investigation types, including fieldwork, ensuring that safety and ethical guidelines are followed (ACSIS125)
Construct and use a range of representations including graphs, keys and models to represent patterns or relationships including using digital technologies as appropriate. (ACSIS129); Evaluating (ASSIS130); Communicating (ACSIS110)

Years 8–10

Program summary

Focus: Abiotic and biotic features of ecosystems; human impacts; adaptations; conservation; land management; sustainability, catchment
Years: 8–10
Time: Half day
Maximum number: 30 students
Subjects: Biology, Science 21, Multistrand, Science, SoSE, Geography, Marine and Aquatic Practices

Description

Science 8–10

Using nets to collect a sample, students capture, identify, observe and release various freshwater organisms, predominantly invertebrates. Students investigate their adaptations for survival and the interrelationships that exist between them and the physical environment in which they live.

Each year level has a slightly different focus consistent with the Australian Curriculum.
