Mangroves (day or camp)

WebPartZone1_1

Year 7

Program summary

Environmental focus: Life cycles; the physical environment; food webs; habitat; adaptations; interdependence; features of plants; biological classification; grouping
Year: 7
Time:  Half day (can be part of a full day's program when combined with a complementary activity)
Maximum number: 1 class group

Description

Students explore a mangrove environment to examine the adaptations for survival and the interrelationships between organisms living in and on the mangroves. This involves a ‘hands-on’ interpretive walk through the mangroves. Students will get wet and muddy!

Each year level has a slightly different focus consistent with the Australian Curriculum (see below).

Year 7  Australian Curriculum (Science)

Complements C2C Units: Organising & Affecting Organisms

Students visit a mangrove environment, identifying mangroves based on their physical characteristics.
They use a dichotomous keys to describe and classify mangroves and crabs (optional).
They explore feeding relationships between organisms and identify their relative positions in the food chains and food webs of a mangrove habitat.

SU: There are differences within and between groups of organisms; Classification helps organise this diversity (ACSSU111)

Interactions between organisms can be described in terms of food chains and food webs; human activity can affect these interactions (ACSSU112)

SHE: Science influences the development of practices in areas of human activity such as industry, agriculture and marine resource management (ACSHE121)

SIS: Processing and analysing data (ACSIS129);
Evaluating (ASSIS130); Communicating (ACSIS110)

(Half day)

Years 8–10

Program summary

Focus: Abiotic and biotic features of ecosystems; human impacts; interactions; adaptations; food chains and webs; conservation
Years: 8–10
Time: Half day
Maximum number: 45
Subjects: Biology, Multistrand Science, Science, SOSE, Geography, Marine and Aquatic Practices, Marine Studies

Description

Science 8–10

C2Cs:

  • Year 8: Unit 8 - Survival (reproduction)
  • Year 9: Unit 6 - Responding to change
  • Year 10: Sustainability and biodiversity

Students investigate a mangrove ecosystem focusing on biodiversity and adaptations of the organisms living in the hostile intertidal environment. Mangroves and crabs are identified using dichotomous key.

Depending on the need of the group, the approach can vary from an investigatory walk to a quadrat/transect study examining the abiotic and biotic features of the ecosystem culminating in an analysis of the findings.

Each year level has a slightly different focus consistent with the Australian Curriculum.
